About the project

The wisdom that carries us rarely comes from a stage.

It comes from a parent who kept going, a nurse who stayed five minutes longer, a teacher who noticed, a neighbour who arrived without being asked, or a friend who sat beside us when there was nothing useful to say.

The Light We Carry is an independent storytelling project devoted to finding those everyday voices, asking what life has taught them, and preserving their words for the people who come after us.

Why it began

I kept meeting people whose wisdom might never be written down.

Through my conversations with people, I began to notice something. Some were approaching the end of their lives. Many carried extraordinary wisdom about family, hardship, love, regret, courage, and what finally matters—but no one had formally asked them to share it.

I found myself asking the same closing question: What advice would you give your children or the next generation? What would you want to leave behind?

Their answers stayed with me. They also made me wonder how much wisdom disappears simply because we wait too long to ask.

I created The Light We Carry to make space for those conversations—and to remind us that a life does not need to be famous to contain something worth preserving.

What we believe

The principles behind every story

  • Every person has something to teach us.

Meaningful wisdom is not reserved for public figures, experts, or people with conventional success.

  • Honesty creates connection.

Hope becomes believable when it makes room for difficulty, grief, uncertainty, and change.

  • Small acts deserve to be remembered.

The gesture that changed a life may never appear in a headline, but that does not make it small.

  • People own their stories.

Participants choose what to share. Their words are edited with care, consent, and respect.

  • Wisdom should travel forward.

A story is preserved not only to remember the past, but to help someone living through the present.

How it works

  1. 01

Someone is nominated—or volunteers their own story.

  2. 02

We ask for their permission before beginning.

  3. 03

We have a thoughtful conversation guided by four core questions.

  4. 04

Their story is edited with care and confirmed before publication.

  5. 05

Their words join a growing archive for future readers.

Someone in your life may be carrying a story you would never want to lose.
